Child and Adult Care Food Program

CACFP Program

Mary Beth Winter - Program Specialist

The Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) nutritional program started in the late 1960’s as the result of a study that reported the poor academic abilities of children whose nutritional needs were not being met. The Free / Reduced school lunch program was then expanded to include day care centers in the 70’s and family child care providers in the late 80’s. The program is administered by NYS Department of Health with funding from the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) and is designed to help reimburse child care providers some of the expenses of feeding children in their care. It is also designed to help meet the nutritional needs of the growing child and establish healthy eating habits for their future.

Research has been done on the nutritional needs of children and it has shown that the CACFP Food program does make a difference in children’s lives. It is important to understand that good nutrition is needed for brain development of preschool age children. CACFP is a key to development because it helps child care providers understand and serve nutritious meals and because it helps make quality child care affordable.
Child Care Council of Orange County, Inc. is the sponsor for CACFP for in home child care providers. This program partially reimburses in-home child care providers for food they serve children in their care.

To qualify for the program you must have at least one child enrolled in your program and be a Registered (Family) child care provider or a Licensed (Group Family) child care provider. You may also participate as a Legally Exempt child care provider.
