The New York State Department of Health’s Obesity Prevention Program encourages new mothers to breastfeed their infants. The Department’s Child and Adult Care Food Program encourages child care centers and family day care homes to support breastfeeding families and recognizes these providers with Breastfeeding Friendly certificates. Child care center/day care home staff complete an assessment that shows they support breastfeeding families.

Why should my center or home support breastfeeding?

  • Breastfeeding helps my kids by providing protection from infection, SIDS and obesity.
  • Breastfed babies are easier to care for because they are less prone to spitting up, are sick less often, and are less likely to have constipation or diarrhea. In addition, diapers have less odor.
  • Breastfeeding helps my center/home financially. Meals containing breast milk are reimbursed by CACFP.
  • Breastfeeding helps me market my center/home. The Breastfeeding Friendly designation can be used in advertisements of my program. My center/home will be listed on the NYS DOH website as Breastfeeding Friendly.
